Hidden Wives by Claire Avery - Book Tour

Hidden Wives
Hidden Wives follows the journey of two young girls forced to grow up in a polygamist community where religion is distorted to justify rampant abuse, incest, misogyny and the taking of child brides.

Fifteen-year-old Sara and her beautiful sister, Rachel, are too young to legally drive a car, but are approaching spinsterhood in Utah’s secret polygamist Blood of the Lamb community. Having long since reached the “age of preparedness,” they will soon be married off to much older men selected by the hidden sect’s revered Prophet.

As Sara, chosen to become her uncle’s fifth wife, grows more distraught over her impending incestuous marriage, she begins to scrutinize the faith she has followed blindly her entire life.

But for Rachel, who will be married to one of the many powerful community leaders vying for her hand, disobeying the Prophet means eternal damnation. Her friendship with the newest member of the community, the young and handsome Luke, starts as an attempt to save his agnostic soul, but ends with the pair falling helplessly in love. When Rachel is forbidden to see him, her absolute faith in the Prophet is severely tested.

When Rachel’s future husband is finally announced, violence erupts, and the girls must find the strength to escape the only life they have ever known… before it’s too late.

My Take on the Book:  Whoa! This book captivated my attention from the first page where it started of " For as long as Sara could remember, she jolted awake every morning, startled to be alive." and all away until the last sentence where "...."Sara's cheeks were pink and her hair was spun silk, framing a face that was mantled in joy."

Those few sentences
don't seem captivating by themselves but they led me into a drama-filled life of those living in a polygamist cult.  It was heart-wrenching to read about the life of Sara and Rachel, two young sisters, living in the cult as well as other women, children and men.  The words drew  you into their lives and the brain-washing that leads them into believing this way of life is their way of salvation.  Adults who lead children into these acts are also brain-washed into believe this is the way of faith.

This book takes you through one society; the good, the bad and the ugly of such life.  Two children, Sara and Rachel, were able to break free from this life which in turn lead to the breakdown of this cult.  I had much empathy for most members of this cult.  It is a brain-washing that leads to this type of group.  I felt awful for previous thoughts of judging those who I have seen that are obviously into one of these cults.   This is a well written book and I highly recommend being read.

GIVEAWAY- 1 copy  (OVER)

Giveaway of the Day- I Hate To Cook Book

The I Hate to Cook Book: 50th Anniversary EditionHere is some information on this book from Mom's Own Words blog! She is giving away 3 copies of this book!  Read and if you want this book, go enter at her blog! I just found her blog today! It is awesome!

(From the Book) About the Book – Stayabed Stew. Skid road Stroganoff. Chilly – Night Chili. Lovely Lamb Shanks. These are just a few of the beloved recipes from Peg Bracken’s classic I Hate to Cook Book. Written in a time when women were expected to have full, delicious meals on the table for their families every night, the book offered women who didn’t revel in this obligation an alternative: quick, simple meals that took minimal effort but would still satisfy.
Fifty years later, times have certainly changed – but the appeal of the I Hate to Cook Book hasn’t. Updated and revised to fit the tastes of today, this new edition includes a foreward by Peg’s daughter Jo and recipe updates for a whole new generation of women who hate to cook (and those who like it, too)!
This book is for everyone, men and women alike, who wants to get from cooking hour to cocktail hour in as little time as possible.
The Review - Chapter 1 – “Never doubt it, there’s a long, long trail a-winding when you hate to cook.” This line sets the tone for the I Hate to Cook Book. The author admits right off in the introduction that this book is not for women who like to cook.  If you would rather be relaxing by the pool with a glass of wine or a dry martini at the end of the day, than spending your time in the kitchen cooking, then this book is for you!

Summer Camp Survival Guide

The Summer Camp Survival Guide: Cool Games, Camp Classics, and How to Capture the Flag

Tis the season to go camping! Some kids head off on their own, like my daughter did a few weeks ago, whereas others go camping as a family!  Whatever your plans for the late Summer and as Fall approaches you will want The Summer Camp Survival Guide chocked full of cool games, camp classics, and how to really capture the flag.

My Take on the Book: This is an awesome book. Have you considered sending your child to camp but not sure if the timing is right? The book includes information just for parents and answers questions like how to choose a camp, where to look for one and is your child ready for camp?  The book includes postcards, activities and games, camp songs, arts and crafts as well as campfire stories and skits.  This book is a great resource for kids and adults!

Giveaway- The Secret Lives of Princesses

The Secret Lives of Princesses
Have you ever picked up a book and immediately fell in love with the cover?  That is exactly what happen when I saw the book, The Secret Lives of Princesses by Philippe Lechermeir and beautifully illustrated by Rebecca Dautremer.

I'm sorry but I do first judge a book by its cover.  If the cover is appealing, I will pick it up and see what it is about.  Now does that mean I won't pick up a less appealing book? Of course not!  It just won't be my first choice!
My Take on the Book:
This is a well crafted book from the words written to all the detailed illustrations! The book starts off with "The Cradle" and explains the secret truth on how to "Grow a princess" and the proper use of seed and location.  "Once the princess is born it is proper to send out announcements of the birth and to remember not to overlook any guest! Some left out guest can get angry and cast spells that aren't so pleasant to the princess (Sleeping Beauty)"

These princesses have been "hidden so well, some no longer even know themselves." Some of the not so known Princesses; Princess Claire Voyant, Princess Sticky-Fingers, Princess Primandproper, Princess Miss Hap, The Unknown Princess and Princess of the Disorient!  Their names reveal their special princess features.  The descriptions are clever, some princesses have a "related to" status to other well known princesses, such as Cinderella. It is a very entertaining book!!!
