Wrecker by Summer Wood Giveaway with the TLC Book Tour

Wrecker: A Novel

Hardcover: 304 pages

Publisher: Bloomsbury USA (February 15, 2011)

Set amid the giant trees of northern California’s magical Lost Coast, Wrecker is the story of a nearly broken boy who unexpectedly finds a family.

After foster-parenting four young siblings a decade ago, Summer Wood tried to imagine a place where kids who are left alone or taken from their families would find the love and the family they deserve. For her, fiction was the tool to realize that world, and Wrecker, the central character in her second novel, is the abandoned child for whom life turns around in most unexpected ways.

It’s June of 1965 when Wrecker enters the world. The war is raging in Vietnam, San Francisco is tripping toward flower power, and Lisa Fay, Wrecker’s birth mother, is knocked nearly sideways by life as a single parent in a city she can barely manage to navigate on her own. Three years later, she’s in prison, and Wrecker is left to bounce around in the system before he’s shipped off to live with distant relatives in the wilds of Humboldt County, California.

When he arrives he’s scared and angry, exploding at the least thing, and quick to flee. Wrecker is the story of this boy and the motley group of isolated eccentrics who come together to raise him and become a family along the way.
For readers taken with the special boy at the center of The Story of Edgar SawtelleWrecker will be a welcome companion.

Scraps of Life Book Club:  The first thing that I thought of when I heard the title of this book, Wrecker, was not that it was a name for a child.  I figured it was about something bigger, like a train wreck that changed everyone that was involved.  It turns out that this book was about a child named Wrecker who was a train wreck and he DID change the lives of those involved.

This little guy was born to a young mother who delivered him in a public park of all places.  At that moment I thought, someone needs to adopt this little boy.  That did happen but not for several years later.  Wrecker lived his first year without a permanent name.  His mother finally named him Wrecker because he wrecked things.

His mother, Lisa, did the best  that she could with what she had.  She loved Wrecker and cared for him but in the end, her lack of parenting skills and resources took over and she got caught up with the wrong crowd that landed her in jail for a 15 year sentence.  This, of course, put Wrecker in the public system.  This little angry, untrained bundle of energy, lived up to his name.  He wrecked things and didn't have a stop button.

The author, Summer Wood has the background of foster-parenting four young siblings.  She knew the system and that led to the writing of this book.  I loved her descriptive writing style of the characters and events throughout the novel.  She made everything so real.  Sad thing is, we all know kids that get caught in the system and have heard of kids like Wrecker.   Ms. Woods takes this little wrecker and puts him into a family that wasn't a family by conventional standards.  It was this type of family that he needed to get unconditional love and support.

I won't go into details and spoil the book but the boy was compared to the likes of a dog.  He attached himself to those who fed and showed him attention.   This really tore at my heart and I knew at that time that this hippie, unconventional family knew him and would be able to break and train him.

Happy National Eggs Benedict Day with Recipes from The Motherboard

My husband loves Eggs Benedict and I can't remember the last time I made them for him. The calorie count is pretty high up there.  Thanks to The Motherboard, I have a new recipe to try out on him that is "guilt-free" because it uses yogurt instead of butter! How about you, do you ever make Eggs Benedict?
National Eggs Benedict Day is April 16 – Take this brunch fave to a whole new level…and make it a family and friend celebration at any meal on its own holiday!  Check out these two delicious recipes that put a twist on the traditional!  And don’t forget about Easter brunch!  The recipes below can be a perfect addition to your Easter menu as well!

Guilt-Free Eggs Benny
  • Ingredients:
2 eggs; 1 light whole wheat English Muffin; 2 slices Canadian bacon; 1/4 cup fat-free plain yogurt; 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard; Kosher salt and cayenne pepper, to taste; 1 tablespoon lemon zest, for garnish; 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish; 1 tablespoon white vinegar, Non-fat cooking spray

  • Instructions:
  • 1. In a large pan coated with non- stick cooking spray, brown the Canadian bacon over medium heat.  Remove from the pan and keep warm.
  • 2. In a small saucepan, over very low heat, combine yogurt, dry mustard, and season with the salt and cayenne pepper, whisking continually until warm.  Be careful: if you overheat, your yogurt will curdle.
  • 3. In a pot of boiling water, add the vinegar and reduce heat to a low simmer.  Crack one egg into a small bowl and very gently add it to the simmering water.  Repeat this for the second egg.  Simmer for 3-5 minutes until the egg is completely coagulated and the yolk looks slightly opaque.
  • 4. In the meantime, toast the whole wheat English muffin.  Assemble by placing the toasted muffin on a plate.  Top with a piece of the Canadian bacon, a poached egg, and then top with the yogurt sauce.  Sprinkle lemon zest and chopped parsley over each egg.  Enjoy.
Seafood Frenzy Eggs Benedict
  • Ingredients:
12 eggs; 1 to 2 tablespoons white vinegar; 6 English Muffins; unsalted butter, for spreading; 6 tablespoons Philadelphia Cream Cheese; 12 spears of asparagus, cut in half and steamed; 1 package of Knorr Hollandaise Sauce; 1/2 lemon, zested and juiced; 1 can lump crabmeat, divided into 12 portions; 12 large slices of smoked salmon; 12 cooked and completely peeled large shrimp; sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste; 12 dill sprigs, about 2 inches long

  • Instructions:
  • 1. In a small bowl, prepare the hollandaise according to the package instructions.  Add the fresh lemon juice. Reserve.
  • 2. In a large pot of boiling water add the vinegar. Turn the heat down to a low simmer.  Crack the eggs one at a time, into a small bowl and add them one at a time very gently into the simmering water.  Cook for 3-5 minutes until the egg is completely coagulated and the yolk looks slightly opaque. Remove from the water.
  • 3. Meanwhile, toast the English Muffins and butter when warm.  Top the butter with a smear of cream cheese.  Top each with two pieces of asparagus. Top the asparagus with a scoop of crabmeat and a piece of smoked salmon.  Place the poached egg on top.
  • 4. Top each with a shrimp and drizzle with the hollandaise. Season with the salt and pepper. Garnish with the dill and the lemon zest. (Serves 6)

Scraps of Life Book Club Review: We are posting two different perspectives on this book for you today! One club member, Marilyn, is a mom of 3 boys and the other, Susie, who is a mom of 3 girls!  Enjoy!

(Marilyn) How To Be God's Little Princess by Sheila Walsh is an adorable book in every way!  It even looks adorable with a hardback pink cover and silver print.  This book was written to help Christian little girls understand the manners, etiquette and true beauty truths that every daughter of the King needs to know.  It is chock full of tips for everything from making friends to having tea, fun ideas for crafts and games with friends, and a strong Biblical basis for the advice given.

I like this book so much that I am planning to pass it on to my dear niece and buy more copies for some of the special little girls in my life.  The section called "How to Be Media Wise" should be required reading for every little girl, and the devotions are appropriately written in perfect Sheila Walsh style!

While I have little boys and won't be using this tip myself, I think that several copies of this book would be the perfect key ingredient for a little girl sleep over.  A terrific book with a terrific message, I would give this one five stars!

(Susie) The first thing that I noticed with this book is the pretty pink & purple cover sporting a shiny, silver tiara!   The cover screams "GIRL" and it sure caught my eye right away.  How To Be God's Little Princess (the letter i is sporting a diamond on the cover): Royal Tips for Manners, Etiquette, and True Beauty, as a mom of 3 girls, this is a book that I WOULD pick up just because it has a beautiful cover.  I don't judge all books by the cover but I have to admit that I do it frequently.  Sometimes, I'm sure that I miss out on a good book when I do this and the author points this out in the book referring to finding friends.

The princess, pink & tiara theme goes with every chapter of the book.  Here are the chapters:
How to Dress Like a Princess, How to Wear a Tiara, How a Princess perfects her poise, How to be friends Princess style, How to dine with Royal success, How to sparkle like a Princess, How to have a rockin' Royal party, How to be Media wise, How to be a perfectly polite Princess, How to be a Princess at home, How a Princess sports a good attitude and How a Princess knows she needs an inner beauty makeover.

Each chapter explains in a cute and princess-like way to let young girls know that they are special for a reason (They have a Heavenly Father) and yes they will have ups and downs (hormone mood swings) but that can't separate them from His love.  The Princess has been given Royal Advisors to help her along the way in this world.  Thank you to author, Sheila Walsh for pointing this out.  This is not your typical "It's all about ME" book that is on the market today.  This book isn't all about ME it is all about how you treat yourself and those around you, how you serve your neighbor in a royal way comes back to how you treat yourself.

As a preteen/teen I ALWAYS loved the magazines that included a quiz! The quiz would tell me what type of person I was or wish that I was.....  Well Ms. Walsh included these type of quizzes throughout the book and are they ever adorable and keeping with the theme of having respect for yourself and others.  The very first quiz is about dressing like a Princess and that includes being modest.  In our home, we call it the 4 B's.  My girls know that they are not to show any Bra, Breast, Back or Belly outside of their royal home and for the most part, inside the home.  Thank you, again, Ms. Walsh for reinforcing this with your book. This chapter also includes fun craft ideas to give you some individual, royal flair.

I  loved the chapter on How to dine with Royal success!  Ms. Walsh touched on all the important areas of hospitality & fellowship with others.  It is done is a fun and cute way that made me laugh as well as say,"Exactly!"  I really think the author was inside of my head when she wrote this book.  There is so much more to be said about this book but you'll have to pick it up and read it for yourself.

My daughters are at the tween/teen/young adult stage and this book goes along with everything we have ever taught them or wanted to teach them but didn't know how.   Every parent of a girl needs to read this book. No, let me take it a little further, every girl born needs to have this "instructional manual"  given to the parents.  Why do I say this? I say this because girls will not learn to be a Royal Princess, daughter of our Heavenly Father, unless they are trained so from birth.  Girls learn from their parents on how they are suppose to act, dress, treat others, respect themselves and more than that and even more importantly  trained to go to Church to receive Christ forgiveness when they fall and sin against themselves and those around them which they will do.  It is by this, they will be Richly blesses with  the Royal Gifts of Christ by the grace of their heavenly Father.

This book is only $9.99 and will make the most perfect gift, as I said earlier for any parent of a girl.  If you know of a Royal princess of reading age 2nd grade through Tween this book would also make a wonderful gift for any occasion.

Rockin' Ribs made with classic Coke! #FamilyClassics

So do you like Ribs?  I never use to like them so I never made them.  My husband has ALWAYS loved ribs and would order them when we would dine at a few of his favorite restaurants. I LOVED watching him get into his ribs, all saucy and messing, eating everything off of the bones! As much as I loved watching him, I always refused to eat them.  I am sure I ate them as a kid and a bad memory stuck in my head.  Have you ever had that happen to you?  Does it affect the way you cook for your family?  It sure does for me!

Anyhow, about 8 years ago, I decided to make my husband ribs for his birthday.  I always make my family whatever they want for their Birthday Dinner or we all go out to their restaurant of choice.  For some reason I had it in my mind to make ribs.  I looked through many recipe books searching for something that seemed tasty. I ended up pulling together a few recipes and decided that I would make him the best ribs ever.  This was the year that I also made him an ice cream cake.  I was on a roll that year!

I cooked the ribs in the crock pot.  The downside of this was that I was home all day and I had to SMELL the ribs all day long.  The positive side of this is that they smelled so good, I could not wait to taste them for myself.  I did taste them before serving and they were....AWESOME!  I converted myself into being a rib eater.  My husband and kids all love this recipe and so do anyone else we make them for or share the recipe with.  I'm convinced that cooking with LOVE and Coca-Cola® did the trick!  Try 'em and let me know what you think!

BEST RIBS EVER Rockin' Ribs, quick and easy (crock pot)  (CLICK for a printable copy)

3 slabs of Pork Loin Back Ribs
1 onions, sliced thinly
1 liter Coca-Cola®
1 cup brown sugar
6 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 container of liquid smoke
BBQ Sauce

Mix brown sugar, garlic and liquid smoke.  Cut rib rack into 3s. Spread on brown sugar mixture as you put in crock pot.  Between each rib add onions.  Do this for all the ribs and onions.  If you have any extra sugar mix then just dump it in crockpot.  Pour in Coca-Cola®.  Cover and cook 6-8 hours on high.  You'll know they are done because they will be super tender.

Note:  I think that the BBQ sauce is a very important part of the ribs.  We ALWAYS use Sweet Baby Rays! I think they sell this sauce all over the place!
Here are a few of the cooking photos:

Lassoed by a Cowboy's Love book review

 A Cowboy's Touch (A Big Sky Romance)
Lassoed by a Cowboy’s Love
Denise Hunter explores whether the truth can really set us free.

Do the secrets from our past affect who we become in the future?  Can the hurts we’ve experienced really prevent us from finding true fulfillment?  In her newest novel, A Cowboy’s Touch, award-winning author Denise Hunter will explore these questions, and readers will discover that “the truth really can set us free.”

Abigail Jones has a secret—a secret from her childhood.  This secret has shaped who she has grown to be—an investigative reporter known as “the Truthseeker” at Viewpointe Magazine in Chicago.  With her blood pressure out of control, the editor, who happens to be her mother, sends her on a three-month sabbatical to check on her great aunt in Moose Creek, Montana.

Wade Ryan may have been voted as the “Sexiest Man Alive,” but he has sworn off women forever.  Four years earlier, the rodeo celebrity gave up his identity to protect his daughter Maddy.  Now he is safely settled on a ranch in Big Sky Country, living in obscurity with his heart guarded by a high, thick fence.  But when Wade’s summer nanny quits without notice, he agrees to let his neighbor’s visiting niece help care for his daughter.  As he begins to feel an attraction to his new hire, Wade starts to question his wisdom in hiring her.  Can he really trust himself with another woman and learn to love again?

Abigail was bored anyway, so no harm in helping out a neighbor.  But her new charge is growing on her, to say nothing of her ruggedly handsome boss.  Abigail may be mesmerized by Wade’s denim blue eyes, but can she really trust him?  She is the truthseeker, after all, so shouldn’t she be able to stay objective and discover the truth about Wade?  But what if she is missing the truth altogether?  What if her past mistakes prevent her from finding the love of her future?  Or, perhaps her relationship with Christ could give her the answers she is seeking.  But “instead of pursuing Him, she’d been pursuing her career.  Chasing story after story as if finding the next truth would somehow scratch an itch that never went away,” she thought.

Hunter’s latest novel will hold you breathless.  As the first book in the Big Sky Romance series, A Cowboy’s Touch is the story about a truthseeker who ends up discovering the real truth and a cowboy who learns to let go of his past.  Hunter shines as she draws her readers into an intriguing world of boots, chaps and cowboy hats.  This heartwarming romance is a story of love, pain and forgiveness.  It has also been named a Women of Faith novel for 2011.
Scraps of Life Book Club Review:
What a lovely book!  I'm a HUGE fan of Christian Romance novel especially the books published through Thomas Nelson Publishers.  This book is in the "Women of Faith" series which works to share the message of hope and grace with millions of women across the country.

I could not put this book down.  I read it from cover to cover.  Speaking of the cover, it is beautiful! The story leads Abigail into a love adventure of big sky country in Moose Creek, Montana.  Abigail was sent from hustle and bustle of big city Chicago to check on her Aunt and to rest in the middle-of-nowhere Montana.  The writing was descriptive and the characters were very believable.  I feel in love with Abigail, Aunt Lucy, Maddy and hunky "Sexiest Man Alive," Wade.

Abigail has brought with her a deep down pain and suffering that she is not admitting and for the most part, unaware of.  She meets up with Wade & Maddy who also have deep down pain and suffering.  All three find a glimpse of hope and love in each other that is shown daily.  All three are longing for love, acceptance and forgiveness.   I love the gradual summer romance that was built up between Abigail & Wade.  Love build up joy & hope for all three and then their world crashes back in on them.

We read and experience pain which in the long run makes everyone involved a better person.  Their love is tested, the pain is dark and hurtful but it doesn't last.  Healing happens, love and hot kisses are restored and, yes, good things happen!  This book is a true example of christian romance and I loved it.  It was very predictable at the beginning that Abigail & Wade were headed into weeks and weeks of romance but the twist and turns were not so predicable!

I'm a HUGE fan of books with Reading group guides.  Thank you, Denise Hunter for including this in your book!
