Bioron to help keep your family healthy

Tis the season for flu and colds! I really believe that the potential threat of H1N1 is greater than the actual amount of people that will be infected. It is a good thing to be made aware of a potential virus. If you are aware of it then you can personally plan your family attack by setting up safe guards of protection.

What type of safe guards can you set up to protect your family?

#1 HANDS
  • This is the time to review or teach your children that hands are germ factories.
  • Tell them to cough or sneeze in the crook of their arm.
  • Wash hands after coughing, sneezing, shaking hands, etc.
  • Wash hand before cooking and eating.
  • Wash hands before leaving the bathroom
  • Do not pick your nose! Germs from your fingers will go in your nose. You will then breath in the germs!
#2 MOUTH
  • Do not share drinks with anyone.
  • Brush teeth at least twice a day and floss.
  • Use chapstick, lip balm, lip stick, etc to keep lips moist. Cracked lips are just asking germs to come on in!
  • Do not put boogers in your mouth.
  • Drink OJ, tea, etc. Keep hydrated.
  • Eat healthy meals! Make your favorite soups.
I'm sure more things can be listed when it comes to our hands and mouth. Germs have to get into your body. You can help prevent some of this by being proactive.

When a cold comes on everyone wants to run to the Doctor. From what I know 99% of the time you do not need to go see your Doctor. Did you know that the waiting room to see your Doctor is a huge germ factory? If there is a fever then that is good sign. It shows that your body is working to attack what is foreign. You want to stay home with a fever. Best medicine for the onset of a cold is to let your body work to attack it and stay away from others. Get plenty of rest. Sometimes sleeping is difficult for our sick ones. Put a movie in and let them lay around and rest if they can't sleep.

One2One Network has teamed up with Boiron, the world leader in homeopathy, to see how we keep our families healthy during this cold and flu season. So how can homeopathy and Boiron help keep our families healthy?

Are you wondering what is homeopathy? It is a therapeutic method that is used to help the body rebalance and heal itself. It is the use of all natural substances to help treat colds, allergies, flu symptons, etc.

Boiron introduced three new homeopathic medicines for children. These products help to safely and naturally work on the flu-like symptons, coughs, etc without interacting with existing medicines or causing unwanted side affects. Go to Boiron and check out their products. The 3 new products are: By clicking Boiron anywhere on my post you can get a $1 off coupon to use to purchase these three products. I strongly suggest that you go check out Boiron before someone gets sick! These are the type of products you will want to have on hand to keep you out of the germ factory Doctor's office.

What are you doing to help keep your family healthy? If you have helpful tips please blog about them. Pass those tips on to other mothers!!

Pumpkin and Ghost Brownies

This week I saw a really cute recipe for Pumpkin colored brownies on The Frugal Girls.com. I posted the link to share with my Facebook friends. Some pointed out that that was a lot of added coloring! My Facebook friend, Lisa, over at Retro Housewive Goes Green said "Having asthma I can't do yellow dye #5 and I seem to have issues with blue dyes. Plus they are linked to all kinds of health issues (lots are banned in other countries). She gave me a link to find natural dyes over at the Natural Candy Store.

I do understand about all the dye. These homemade pumpkins really do look yummy? The Frugal Girls.com photo

My daughter and I decided for school that we would make some. We chose to do GHOST so not to use all the food coloring. She also wanted to make pumpkins and decided to just use the white butter cream frosting on them too!

Here is our quick recipe makeover:

Pumpkin Ghost Brownies

*Make your favorite brownies into a 9 X 13 pan.

*When cooled use your cookie cutters. Try to fit each piece in tight to not waste any brownies! We were able to get 12 cut-outs.

*We made buttercream frosting. Do this while the brownies are cooling. You can also buy frosting.

*Once cooled and cut out then frost and EAT! We do not like gobs of frosting so we lightly frosted ours.

Tall, Dark and Fangsome Giveaway and Review

Thanks to Hachette Book Group for giving me the book as well as 5 copies to giveaway to my readers.

I'm a huge Twilight Series fan! I'm impatiently waiting for Stephenie Meyer to add more books to her series. I must say that I thought this book was going to be a bit "edgy" when I agreed to read and review it for Hachette Books. I"m not into reading just any vampire story. I want fun, excitement, romance and just enough adventure without getting to gory and graphic.

Accordingly to Hachette, "Michelle Rowen, author of Tall, Dark & Fangsome was born in Toronto, Ontario. As a child she decided that when she grew up she would become a flight attendant, a jewel thief, or a writer. One out of three ain't bad. She is a self-confessed bibliophile, the proud owner of an evil cat named Nikita, Reality TV junkie, and has an unhealthy relationship with all things Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Product Description:
Sarah Dearly's vampire life is not all B-positive cocktails. A curse made her a nightwalker, the most vicious vamp there is; the charm she wears to curb her deadly tendencies is losing its juice; and a hunter from hell is turning up the heat. Gideon Chase will kill the ones she loves most if she doesn't obey his orders. That includes breaking up with master vampire Thierry and turning Gideon into an immortal vamp so he can escape a doom of eternal hellfire.

Making things worse are Sarah's growing feelings for Gideon, a bad boy who keeps showing a vulnerable side . . . but is it for real? Will Sarah's dark side take over? Or can she cure herself of the nightwalker curse in time to stop Gideon and finally live happily ever after with Thierry . . . forever?

Personally, I loved this book! I learned that Tall, Dark & Fangsome is the fifth and final book in Michelle Rowen’s humorous Immortality Bites paranormal romance series. I didn't realized that it was a series until I started reading this one. I didn't have time to get the others so I just jumped in and read! I was able to follow the store line and Michelle added tidbits of history to keep me into the current story without feeling lost. I am going to read the other four. She filled the book with twist and turns to keep her reader from getting bored! I loved the charming personality of her characters. It wasn't overly mushy! If you love fun romance and adventure with a side of paranormal then this is a series you must read!!!

Sleepless Nights Review and Giveaway

Thanks to HarperCollins for sending me Sleepless Nights to review! They are also giving me 3 copies to pass on to my readers!

This is the first book that I read by Sarah Bilston. She has also written Bed Rest.

After the pregnancy from hell, motherhood has to be plain sailing, right? Quinn "Q" Boothroyd is in for a shock.
And baby Samuel isn't the only thing on Q's mind—she and her husband, Tom, have some difficult decisions to make in a sinking economy. Do they still want to be big-firm lawyers, or is it time to scrap their former careers and try something new? When a chance opportunity introduces them to an eccentric small-town lawyer, the couple's integrity—and marriage—is tested to the limit.
Meanwhile, Jeanie, Q's younger sister, is having problems of her own. Boyfriend Dave seems dangerously close to popping the question, but is she ready to settle down?
There are sleepless nights all around this summer: one woman will wake up to motherhood, the other to becoming an adult. Both must dare to make their beds—and lie in them.

*******************************************
I personally loved the story between the three sisters. I have three daughters and I could easily relate to this triangle of interaction. It was a very engaging theme and the characters were outstanding. Down side of the book would be that it was only 284 pages!! I could have easily taken on double that!

The author did a great job bringing in real life issues of marriage, new child and career. These are real issues couples have to deal with. I loved how the characters dealt with these everyday issues. I was very pleased at how well she pulled the couple together to work on their problem.

**********************************************

Use OpenDNS to protect your children

Use OpenDNS

OpenDNS is a FREE internet service designed to make web browsing safer and faster. It works by caching web pages on its massive servers so that when you access a web address it will generally load faster. OpenDNS also has some features that make web browsing much safer, especially for children and families.

Setup and Use

Setting up the DNS server is simple. The OpenDNS website provides instructions for most common types of modems and routers as well as generic instructions for setup. Setting up the service involves setting your router or modem to use the "Static DNS" addresses provided by OpenDNS. (A DNS is the numeric address behind the usual words you type in a website's address; it's like the "phone number" your computer looks up when accessing a particular website). What's going on is that you are telling your modem or router that instead of going straight to a website, it will first go through OpenDNS's server, to make that website load faster. Once the service is setup, there's nothing more you have to do. It works automatically in the background and you may even notice that many web pages load faster than they did before.

Shortcut Features

Since OpenDNS is the service actually routing you to the website, there are some nice features you can set up. (Settings can be accessed via a "Dashboard" control panel; this requires registering with OpenDNS, which is free but still optional.) OpenDNS provides some built in "auto correct" features. For example, if you typed gogle.com or google.cmo, OpenDNS will fix the address automatically and send you to google.com.

OpenDNS also allows you to make shortcuts. For example, instead of typing in www.wikipedia.com/en each time, you can simply make a shortcut from your OpenDNS dashboard settings for something like "wp." Then, simply typing "wp"in your address bar will be enough to load the page.

Security and Filtering Features

Perhaps the most useful service that OpenDNS provides is website filtering. (Available only to registered users). OpenDNS has cataloged and categorized most websites. Many are tagged with such labels as "Adult, Nudity, Violence, Gambling" and many others. Using your OpenDNS dashboard settings, you can select from several standard levels of filtering or customize your filtering from over 50 categories. If any computer that is connected to your network surfs to a website that is blocked, an OpenDNS blocked page will appear instead of the website informing you that the page is not available and listing the categories for which it is blocked. It is possible to exclude certain addresses from being blocked. This is probably the best option for web filtering for parents who want to keep their children from stumbling across bad sites!

In addition, OpenDNS catalog of sites will keep you from visiting false or phishing websites (sites that look real but are fake in order to steal your personal information).

OpenDNS is not perfect. In Firefox, for example, the Google Autosearch feature of the address bar will take you to the OpenDNS search results, instead of Google's top pic. But this is a very tiny inconvenience compared to the service OpenDNS offers.

OpenDNS is a great service that is entirely FREE! (It's supported by advertising on searches and redirected mis-typed sites). It helps speed up web browsing while at the same time protecting you and keeping the Web controlled in a way that works for you and your family.

Give it a try today! www.opendns.com

Million Minute Family Challenge update

We are 6 weeks into the Million Minute Challenge! (Runs through Dec. 31st)
The goal is to get people playing non-electronic games for a minimum of 20 minutes at a time!

Did you know: (I got this information from the Million Minute Website)

When the tomb of the ancient Egyptian King Tut was discovered in the 1920s, among the artifacts found were a game board, dice and playing pieces. That means board games have been around for over 3000 years! Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have enjoyed playing games such as backgammon, checkers, dominoes, and chess for thousands of years. Even before Columbus crossed the Atlantic, board games were being enjoyed all over the globe, by every culture except the Eskimos and the first Australian settlers.

Many of the early settlers to come to North America brought board games with them to trade or to keep their children entertained, but it wasn't until after the Revolutionary War that the first toy companies appeared. Most of the first games were made of paper and cardboard. Since printing companies were familiar with paper and cardboard, most toy companies began as printers.

The Challengers have currently logged in 163,880 minutes!!! It is never to late to join in the fun! Our small group, CrazyGamers, has 4,337 and is ranked in 8th place! This involves a group of 15 so far. We are planning a few large game nights to get more people playing!

If you are in one of the below states please consider joining! They really want to see every state participating!

Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Washington DC
Hawaii
Idaho
Iowa
Minnesota
Mississippi
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
North Dakota
South Carolina
South Dakota
Vermont
West Virginia

Here is one of the games we've played recently.
It is called BEFOUR YOU KNOW: The Color will Show by PATCH games!
Here is what my husband had to say about the game on his review on Boardgamegeek.com:

The game is played on a board full of squares in which you place colored pieces. The first one to get four in a row of their color wins.
But there are some twists: Only you know what color you are. (You draw a color randomly, face down at the beginning of the game). Pieces are drawn from a bag and have to be played, no matter what color they are. "Wild" pieces assist any player, counting as whatever color is necessary. There is a hidden element and a random element to the otherwise traditional "four-in-a-row" game.
Time to dust off your games a play a few with your kids! Give your family a game name, register at Million Minute Challenge, and log your minutes!!!

Click here to check out another game we like to play!

How can you get to 1 Million minutes?
With groups working in all 50 states we can reach 1 million minutes in 2009. If 1,000 families, groups or organizations X 50 states X 20 minutes of game play = 1 million minutes!
