Honey Whole Wheat Pizza Crust Recipe

My family LOVES pizza. We love to make it, buy it, try it you name it, we love Pizza. Besides making it at home we do love searching and finding new pizza places to eat, too. This pizza crust uses whole wheat. My family didn't know the difference and liked it. What flours do you like using for your crust?

Potato Pizza Crust

This is the first time that I experimented with a Pizza Potato Crust. I got the recipe from the cookbook 300 Best Potato Recipes: A Complete Cook's Guide by Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh. I played around with it to cook a new pizza recipe for my family. What are some of your favorite pizza crust?

If you like potatoes then this is your cookbook. I could not believe all the different varieties of recipes in this book. I tried the pizza potato crust because it was truly something I would not have thought of on my own. The description of the recipe is the reason why I tried it.

"As un-classically Italian as this preparation may sound (full recipe Potato-Crusted Margherita Pizza) it is actually a traditional recipe style from Apulia, in southern Italy. I first had this at a little sidewalk bakery cafe in the city of Lecce."

Potato Crust

Ingredients

1 large floury potato, peeled and quartered
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3/4 cup all purpose flour

Directions

1. Follow Step 1, *Classic Mash Deluxe (pg. 50), adding only 1/4 tsp salt to cooking water.
2. Preheat oven to 450. When done with Step 1, transfer cooked potato to a bowl. Using a potato masher, mash potato with 1 Tbsp of oil. Knead in remaining 1/4 salt and flour, adding flour a little at a time until mixture forms a soft dough (if dough is sticky after using the recipe amount of flour, add a little more or even a little water to help the dough come together). Shape into a disk on a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12-inch round.
3. Transfer dough to pizza pan or pizza stone that is lightly greased. Add toppings and bake 15 minutes or until edges are golden.

*Classic Mash Deluxe for this recipes just means that you place the potato in a saucepan and add cold water to barely cover it, add salt. Cover loosely and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and cook for 20 minutes or until the potato is tender all the way through when prodded with the tip of a paring knife. Drain, leaving potato in saucepan. Return to very low heat and shake the pot back and forth to remove any trace of moisture. This will make the potato dry, light and fluffy.

Make Your Own Pizza for Kids

My girls LOVE to make their own pizza! This tradition goes back to toddler times of making english muffin pizzas. Then, it evolved into tortilla shell pizzas over the years. Finally, we have moved on to forming the dough into pizza shape and adding special toppings. Pizza is very important to this household. We share our tradition during sleepovers, homeschool lunches and youth group dinners. I do see a change coming in the near future! We want to make our own dough.
Since this post went live in 2009 we do make our own homemade pizza crust and love trying different varieties.

MYOP (Make your own Pizza)

CRUST

You can't have a pizza without the crust. I just eat the toppings at times but you still need to bake it on the crust! Right now we go super quick and use Pilsbury pre packaged pizza dough. We just open up a can and break it into 4 parts. Each person then forms the crust to their liking! Thick or thin - up to them. (We plan on experimenting with home made doughs again. We are looking for a crispy crust, tossed crust and deep dish doughs so please share)

SAUCE

They say the secret is in the sauce. We have no secret for these MYOP. They like plain and simple can tomato sauce. We have the sauce people and the no sauce people.
SPICES
I set out garlic powder, italian seasonings, basil, fresh chopped garlic, etc. They experiment with the spices. EVOL - Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also used. Some like to add it to the baking pan and put dough on top and then add more EVOL.

TOPPINGS

Can you say smorgasboard? Fresh mushrooms, canned mushrooms, pepperoni, veggie sausage, ham, black and green olives, pineapple, chicken, fresh garlic, onions, green pepper, jalapeno peppers, etc. It is FUN when the children bring their favorite topping! Very seldom do we get repeat toppings! I would love to have an adult MYOP party! Bet the toppings would be really really fun!
DON'T forget about CHEESE! Parmesan and Mozzarella are the cheeses the children want!

BAKE at 375 for 10-15 min. Just watch for it to get bubbly and toasty and take it out! I let them use a pizza cutter and or scissors! They love cutting it their way!

I always have leftover toppings. I store them in labeled freezer bags.

Family Favorite Pizza Soup Recipe

******PIZZZZZA SOUP******
This pizza soup is such a fun and yummy soup. This is easy to cut in half and or double for large crowds. This amount here will make a large crockpot full. I don't leave out ingredients my kids might not like so instead they try it and if they don't like it then they politely have to pick it out. This is one of our go to fall recipes.

Ingredients

--2 jar (14 oz) of pizza sauce
--3 empty jars full of water (this time I used lg can of tomato juice- much better)
--3 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
--1 freshed chopped jalapeno
--1 lg red onion, chopped
--1 jar sliced mushrooms
-- 2 lg can petite diced tomatoes
-- 3 lb ground turkey or beef or Italian sausage-any kind (turkey, chicken, pork, etc whatever meat you prefer
--1 lg sliced pepperoni, sliced in quarters or as circles
--8 fresh basil leaves, chopped (or 1 T dried)
--1 T dried oregano
--1/2 to 1/3 cup of dried pasta (I don't add the pasta to the soup...I let people add it themselves)
--shredded mozzarella cheese (to add later as a topping)

Directions

Use a large Crockpot for this recipe.
Serves 10-12 hungry adults with leftovers.

Wash and prepare veggies. Dump them into the crockpot. Cut up the sausage into small pieces--I sliced, then cut the pieces in fourths ( or dump in the other meat raw as it will cook in the crockpot) Add to crockpot. Cut up the pepperoni, add it, too. Add basil and oregano. Pour in the pizza sauce, and follow with three empty jars of water (or lg can of tomato juice).

COOKING

Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours for the flavors to meld. It will smell very good! Try to not keep opening the lid of the crockpot. Make it when you will be out of the house. (lol)

Thirty minutes before serving, add the dry pasta. It can take 20-30 min to cook. I prefer to make the pasta separate and let people add it to their soup.

Garnish/top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Serve w/ garlic bread! YUMMY-OOOoohh
