Chocolate Amish Friendship Bread Brownies

We are huge brownie fans in this house. I have blogged and shared brownie recipes many times with all of you. I also have blogged about Amish Friendship Bread recipes! Today's recipe is a good combination of both and are super easy to make! If you do not have an Amish Friendship Bread Starter going or know where to get one click over to the Amish Friendship Bread Starter recipe and you can create your own in no time!

Chocolate Amish Friendship Bread Brownies

Ingredients

1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter
3 eggs
3/4 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups flour
1/4 cup of cocoa
1 small box chocolate instant pudding mix, dry
1 cup chocolate chips, any variety

Directions

1-Preheat oven to 325° F (165° C).
2-In a large mixing bowl add all the ingredients and mix just until combined.
3- Light oil a 9 x 13 inch cake pan and lightly dust with sugar.
4-Pour the batter into cake pan and sprinkle top with 1 teaspoon sugar and a few handfuls of chocolate chips (optional).
5-Bake for 1 hour or check and see if brownies are coming off the side of the pan. Insert a toothpick to see if brownie mix is clean but know that you might get melted chocolate chips on the toothpick.

Kitchen Notes:
-For the sake of those asking I wanted to clarify this just incase you have the same question. When we have baked these, we remove after 1 hour no more or no less because that is what works for our oven. Your oven might bake them quicker. Make note this is a 325 recipe which does bake slower and is a common baking temp for amish friendship bread recipes.
-Amish Friendship Bread Starter is in this recipe so that is why they will bake longer than a typical brownie recipe in a 9X13 pan. For your own recipe, feel free to do the toothpick test for batter at 45 minutes. If the center has risen, the brownies are pulling away from the sides and the toothpick is free of batter (not chocolate chips) then they are done. We've never cooked them longer than 1 hour, either. BUT that doesn't mean your oven requires an even longer baking time.
-I hope this helps and really it is such an easy recipe! Someone also asked if the starter had to be added to this recipe. I can tell you that I have only used the amish friendship bread starter added into the recipe. If you cook it without the starter everything else will need to be adjusted and I haven't tried it without.

  1. Hey, this sounds really good, but my question is, does it really take an HOUR in a 9x13 pan? Just want to be sure, cause I'd love to try this. Thanks! BTW, I love your website!

  2. For the sake of people asking, I'm going to make a kitchen note. Thanks for bringing up that point. When we have made them, we took them out after 1 hour and never earlier or later BUT that doesn't mean someone else's oven wouldn't be sooner. The Starter makes them moist and most afbread recipes take 1 hour to cook for that reason. If you want, you can check at 45 min and just make sure the center has risen and toothpick for the batter comes out clean! Hope that helps!

Thanks for stopping in and your sweet comment!

  4. Great recipe! I had to put 3/4 cup of white sugar and 1/2 cup of brown sugar because I ran out of the white sugar. It was deliciious. Cooked 1 hour total. Also made some mini muffins out of the batter and they were great!
