Once in a Blue Moon Book Review author Eileen Goudge

Once in a Blue Moon
Once In A Blue Moon, do I find a book that I really enjoy. I'm talking about the type of book where before you are even finished reading you want to know more and more about the characters. You are not wanting the book to end because the end becomes just that.... The End! You are pleading with the author in your mind to keep writing. You keep checking to see how many pages that you have left to read and are hoping that you have counted wrong! When I got to the end, I was very content with what I had read and how it ended.
The author, Eileen Goudge, is a Four-time New York Times bestselling author whose novels include: The Diary, Domestic Affairs, Woman in Red, One Last Dance, Garden of Lies, and Thorns of Truth. There are more than four million copies of her books in print worldwide. She lives with her husband, entertainment reporter Sandy Kenyon, in New York City. This is the first book that I have read of hers. I've since added her other books to my "must have" books list. If you are a fan of Jodi Picoult and LuAnn Rice then you will soon become a fan of Eileen Goudge.

About the book from:  Sisters Lindsay and Kerrie Ann have known hardship from an early age. Without guidance from their neglectful mother, their only aid came from an unlikely source, a retired exotic dancer by the name of Miss Honi Love. When the girls’ mother was sent to prison, Miss Honi tried unsuccessfully to save them from being separated and sent into foster care.

Thirty years later, Lindsay is still trying to reconnect with her sister. The owner of a bookstore in the sleepy California seaside town of Blue Moon Bay, she was lucky enough to have been adopted by a loving couple. Unbeknownst to her, Kerrie Ann has suffered a very different life. Bounced from one foster home to the next, she ran away as a teenager before becoming a drug-addicted single mother. Now, newly sober, Kerrie Ann is fighting to regain custody of the little girl who was taken from her.

Neither sister’s expectations are met when they’re finally reunited. But as the two sisters engage in the fiercest battles of their lives, they are at last drawn together despite their differences, restoring belief in the unshakable bond of family.

My take on the book:  For me the book was about life, family, and friendships. The life these two sisters lived with their mother would not be the life you would wish on anyone. Sadly said, there are a lot of girls out there growing up in this type of environment. The older sister becomes the mother to the baby sister. How unfair that as a child, you aren't given the chance to be a child. There are so many selfish people out there. These two girls are blessed with Miss Honi Love, a lady that lives in their apartment complex. She becomes the family figure that keeps watch.  She does help with the little sister, Kerri Ann. Miss Honi is the mother figure, the thread of loyalty and friendship, and the once in a "blue moon" person who bonds them together.

I do wish that the book would have been longer! Whew! I feel so much better now that I said that! I do think that she completed the book where it needed to end. I do hope that she writes more using these characters. I would love to read about the mom and how she got to where she was in the story when the children were taken away. What was her life like up until she died in prison? I didn't grow up with my mother. I, too, wonder about her and what her life was like before having children and her life the past 30-something years.

  23. I think a blue moon happens only once a year when there are two full moons in one month, in other words very rarely.
